The Melancholy of Finishing a Book
Y'all, when I start a new Woven Branches novella, I am doing more than writing a soap opera, I am returning to a familiar place and visiting old friends. Obviously, I have specific ideas about where plots are headed, I've outlined the action that each chapter must contain, and I have a general idea of the dialouge that will happen. But...
I often allow for the conversations between characters to start out as a stream of consciousness before I edit and write a second draft. I feel as if I am channeling these people. Because of this, I am often surprised myself by the things that are said (especially by Ruth, ha ha).
When I wrap a book up, it's sad for me to say a goodbye, even when I know it's really a "see you later." I miss these fictional folks as if they were actual flesh and blood people in my life.
The good news is, Woven Branches is a serial, and it's only ever a matter of time before I drop back in for a visit to Tennyson County.
